Ilomilo Review - Xbox Live Arcade

Ilomilo
Microsoft Game Studios
Southend Int.
3D Puzzle Action

Ilomilo is a great to look at. The game it's self starts out very simple.
You begin the story learning that Ilo and Milo like nothing more than meeting up for a cup of apple tea everyday… Until one day when they go to the park there world is turned upside down and they can no longer reach each other.
The main point of the game is to get Ilo and Milo standing next to each other.

You start out with 5 'tutorial' levels which are simple introductions on how to meet up.
After this there are 4 chapters each containing 9 levels and 3 bonus levels.
To unlock the bonus levels you will need to collect all 3 mini Safkas from each level.

When you first get into the game play your tricked into thinking it will be a walk in the park
You won't be thinking this for long, especially when you hit the bonus stages which at times are so frustrating you may become prone to 'control throwing' tantrums.

The difficulty is mixed through out. Some stages seem stupidly simple where as other will have you pulling your hair out. The bonus levels get increasingly difficult and inventive. You may find your self picking up and putting down the same block in the same place for a good 10 minuets until your brain finally clicks 'by George I have the answer'!

Handy tip: Hitting 'Y' to take a step back and look at the whole level can really save your some brain ache down the road.

Controls:
Very simple. You have the use of the direction stick to move, 'X' to switch between ilo and milo and 'A' to pick up and move an object. The right direction stick can be used to move the camera around and 'Y' to zoom in and out.

Achievements:
You will have to play through the game 1 ½ times to get all the achievements. The first time can be done in coop (to get all 10 eggs) the second time you zip through 6 stages in each chapter to get to chapter 3, Wet Ink - To nab your self the Ultimate Console (AKA Shuffle). This is a mini game which will nab you that last achievement.
Over all I'd say they are easy but time consuming. If I can max it out then any one can lol.

Visual:
Ilomilo is a visually very pretty. It has an odd look to it that kind of reminds me of those fabric softener adverts. Everything has a slightly stitched together look. It's pleasing on the eyes and as a girl I can't help but squeal "It's so cute".

Sound:
The music is very relaxing and catchy, at times a tad repetitive but while playing you'll find that you can't help but hum or whistle along.

Longevity:
This game takes on average 6 hours to play through from beginning to end. This can vary based on how well you do with problem puzzles. After completing the game and having got all the bonus items in each level you can't help but think "I want to try that again and see how few moves I can complete it in".

Point of note:
It might be worth mentioning that if you (like me) suffer from game induced motion sickness that the option to get 95% of the achievements in coop is a god send. It gives you the well needed opportunity to look away for a bit before motion sickness can take hold of you. When I first tried playing this through on my own I managed an hour before needing to crawl upstairs in to a dark room feeling sick and sorry for my self lol. So be warned.

Multiplayer:
Local COOP only.

Conclusion:
It's a beautiful game to look at that puts your brain to the challenge of thinking on a 3D level. At 800pt's I think it's worth every penny, but for gamers who go through fast and hard it may be worth waiting until it comes down to 400pt's on a weekly deal.
It's well designed, cute, fun/ frustrating that should be a must for all who puzzle game lovers.
And you'll be humming the tunes for days lol

Rating: 8 out of 10
